Work in Progress: The Sky is the Limit

Weaving together two journeys—that of my astronaut sister, Janice Voss, and the journey we went through as a family, this book is unlike other astronaut books. Written from the perspective of the younger sister, it describes Janice’s evolution into the girl who could get picked for the space mission. Interwoven through/with her personal story is the timeline of the space program and the historical moment that included Apollo, Trekkies, and the sixties.

Dr. Janice Voss was one of the most flown astronauts of the shuttle era, holding the record for number of flights with five other shuttle women. Her career at NASA spanned the arc of the Space Shuttle program. Her death from breast cancer cut it short too early.

Revolution in Simulation

In an experiment that would foreshadow the explosion of realistic immersive video gaming, DOD hired Hollywood to help them develop an effective trainer for warfighters, specifically, tank commanders. Did you know adding the undertone of a lion’s roar to the sound of ammunition heightens a person’s fear response? This book looks at the video simulation revolution in the early days of its development.

Space Flight Handbook

This handbook represents the accumulated knowledge of how NASA manages program and projects coming out of NASA’s human, robotic, and scientific missions from September 2014. This handbook is a codification of the “corporate knowledge” for NASA space flight programs and projects. These practices have evolved as a function of NASA’s core values on safety, integrity, teamwork, and excellence, and may also prove a resource for other agencies, the private sector, and academia. The handbook provides context, rationale, and explanation of NASA requirements and are the legacy from the victories and defeats of the Space Shuttle era, including the checks and balances and initiatives to better control cost and risk and some of the
hard-won best practices and lessons learned.

This handbook is a free publication of the U.S. Government, however, it was never printed by NASA. Please contact me if you would like information for how to access the updated handbook for free from NASA or obtain a free digital copy of this edition.

There is a memorial note to Janice Voss on the back cover pages of the handbook under the Kepler Space Telescope photographs.

Farm Journal

This farm has been in my mother’s family for over 130 years. The farmhouse was built by my grandfather’s father. Our roots in these 140 acres and this community go deep. But like the roots of the persimmon trees my grandparents planted or the black walnut trees my Dad planted, our roots are ephemeral compared to how ancient the land is. Being the stewards of this land is a privilege and takes work.
